The Pixel Pitch Problem: Why Your LED Wall Looked Great in the Demo and Bad at the Venue

Your LED wall looked great in the warehouse demo. Then you got to the venue and it looked like a video game from 2003. Here is what happened: pixel pitch.

Pixel pitch is the distance between each LED on a wall. The smaller the number, the sharper the image — and the closer someone can stand before it starts to look pixelated.

In a 50,000 sq ft arena? A P3.9 panel is fine. Viewers are 40+ feet away. In a 3,000 sq ft ballroom or boardroom? Those same panels look terrible. Your guests are 10 feet away. You can count the pixels.

For high-end productions in intimate spaces, you need P1.6 or finer. The panels cost more. But your client flew in their top 50 accounts for this. The last thing you want is a blurry LED wall behind the CEO.

The question to ask your AV company before you sign: "What is the pixel pitch, and what is the minimum viewing distance?" If they cannot answer it in 10 seconds, that is your answer.
